Most developing countries depend their economic growth on natural resources. Therefore, rapid and extensive extraction can’t be prevented. But it comes with huge cost, including prone to miss-management (corruption), environmental degradation as well as social conflict and poverty.Even economic development that was put as the driven factor of exploitation is highly questionable. The fact shows that resource-rich countries tend to have poor economic performance. Sadly, this phenomenon is not only found in one or two resource-rich countries, but it’s the common problem among the rich.

Given the situation, it is important to take a bold action to address the extractive challenge in order to to realize SDGs. The question is how? Focusing on the three main challenges of extractive governance, including data and information openness, community engagement as well as environmental protection, the session is aiming to share experience and lesson learnt to meet those challenges.

Rizky from PWYP Indonesia will share PWYP's work on promoting data and information openness in the sub-national level in Indonesia. How data and information openness can bring a brighter future for indigenous people in natural resource rich area. Interesting story from Philippine on mainstreaming FPIC in the field extractive sector will be delivered by Alan from Bantay Kita. And Jessica from WRI will specifically speak about the alternative strategy to protect environment from the massive expansion of extractive industries.
